BITCHIN’
BITTER
BITTER is a class of English traditional ale, with three general subcategories: Ordinary bitter; Special Bitter; and Extra Special Bitter. Terms like ordinary, special, and extra special don’t mean that one is automatically better than another. Rather, these designations indicate in their broadest sense a difference in original specific gravity and final alcohol content.
Bitchin’ Bitter, despite being the lightest of the three in terms of body and alcohol, has a warm, toasty maltiness reminiscent of English biscuits with a subtle note of sweet caramel. The base malt used in this brew is from the Glen Eagle Maltings in Scotland, one of the last remaining traditional “floor-malted” barley producers in the world. It’s complex fruity character is attained by traditional warm English-style ale fermentation. This is backed up by a very distinct hop flavor and aroma, due to the use of English Challengers and East Kent Goldings in the kettle and as dry-hops in conditioning. It is a bit hazy as it is unfiltered and unfined, but it should brighten over the course of its first few days on tap. Carbonation is lower than our standard beers in keeping with tradition, and overall this seemingly mild beer is quite complex despite its delicate character. This is an excellent session beer, and we sure hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
Cheers!
