80 Shilling Scottish Ale
Release Date: Wednesday, 21 July, 1999
This new seasonal beer is styled after Scottish ales of old that were taxed in shillings per barrel according to their strength. (This is not a Scotch ale. Scotch ales, such as CBC’s own Bannatyne’s Scotch Ale, are very strong, rich beers. Scottish ales are more “everyday” brews.) Strengthwise, an 80 shilling is in the slightly above-average range of Scottish ales. Our version is made with Maris Otter 2-row pale malt imported from Britain and a high percentage of roasted barley, as well as caramel and biscuit malts. We added just enough bittering hops in the kettle to balance the malty character of this brew. Eighty shilling is malty, roasty and medium-bodied—just right for summertime drinkers who want something a little robust.
