DOUBLE BROWN ALE
Release date: Thursday, FeBREWary 1, 2001
The latest release from the Cambridge Brewing Company lineup of specialty beers is an interesting and very quaffable brown ale. It features a healthy dose of Belgian “Special B” malt, along with Aromatic and Chocolate malt. As you would expect, the resulting malt flavors are quite complex, with an emphasis on the warm, dark, bready flavors of the Belgian malt, then caramel and bittersweet chocolate carrying into the finish.
This beer has been heavily hopped with German Tradition, Northwest Cascades, and Centennials via five separate additions to the kettle. It has also been extensively dry-hopped with the aforementioned varieties. Hop flavor and aroma are noticeably fresh and somewhat spicy, and the hop finish, while strong, is very dry and balanced in conjunction with the lingering malt flavors.
“Double Brown” has a dense tan head, and is dark brown and opaque. It can be described as being about in the middle between the Amber and our Porter, more robust than the former, and chocolatey and hoppy like the Porter but without the roasted coffee finish. Served unfiltered (as are almost 100% of our specialty beers) and naturally conditioned, it is medium-bodied, fresh, and lively, and makes quite a good session beer as the alcohol content is only five and a half percent by volume.
So drink up, and tell me you like it!!
Cheers,
