Persephone’s Ruby Ale

As told in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Persephone was daughter to Zeus and Demeter (goddess of fertility of the earth). Her abduction by Hades caused Demeter to withdraw from Olympus and to cause famine upon the earth by withholding the fertility of the land. Persephone was eventually allowed to leave Hades, but because she had eaten seven pomegranate seeds while there, she was forced to spend half of each year with Hades and half with her mother. Her return from the Underworld was celebrated as the Vernal Equinox, or first day of Spring, and symbolized the rebirth of the fertility of the land.

Persephone’s Ruby Ale is an appropriately pomegranate red-colored ale, brewed with seven different malts (symbolizing the seven seeds) and featuring a dominant but smooth hop character from the Varietal Centennial. Floral, fruity, and spicy aromas and flavors first greet the palate, followed by a velveteen sweetness from Pale, Aromatic, Biscuit, Vienna, Belgian caramel malts, and roasted and flaked barley. Its finish is dry with a lingering touch of citrus and fruit, symbolizing the balance of the seasons and welcoming Spring, the shoots of the hop rhizome, and the sprouting of the barleycorn seed.
